Your body naturally produces ear wax to protect the inside of your ear from external conditions and infections.

  • Ear wax is natural, if your ear wax is not causing you issues it should be left alone.
  • In normal circumstances ear wax will move slowly from the inside to the outside of your ear, where it will then fall out on it’s own.
  • If wax builds up it can form a plug, blocking your ear canal. Sometimes the plug will naturally find its way out of your ear, but in other cases a treatment is required for removal.
  • Using cotton wool buds or ear candles is not recommended, as further damage is likely using these techniques.

What is the cause of ear wax build up?

Characteristics that people can have that cause their build up;

  • Be a high producer of ear wax
  • Naturally produce dry ear wax, (ear wax gets drier as you age)
  • Hairy ear canals
  • Narrow ear canals
  • Bone growth in the ear canal (For example: Surfers Ear)

Symptoms of an Ear Wax Blockage

Ear Wax blockage within your ear canal can cause the following symptoms:

  • Itchiness, discomfort or pain within your ears
  • Hearing problems/loss
  • Tinnitus (Ringing/Buzzing noises)
  • Dizziness or an increased prone to vertigo

What to do if you have a blockage in your ear canal

When suffering from the symptoms mentioned above most people will use cotton wool buds in the attempt to dislodge the blockage.

This is one of the worst things you can do, in most cases the blockage will be pushed up against the ear drum - worsening the problem, with potential for serious injury.

Ear drops and ear irrigation are possible solutions for removal of the blockage. But these techniques often don’t succeed leaving liquid then trapped in the ear.

The best solution is ear wax removal through microsuction, a far more efficient solution compared to any prescribed medicated ear drops, irrigations or powders.

An ear nurse, through the use of a microscope or microscope glasses, is able to clearly see inside the ear canal under a magnified view and remove the wax through the suction method. Unnecessary movement and minimal discomfort are ensured for successful wax removal.

Here at Ear Hygiene Clinic, we offer microsuction to ensure our customers the safest and most effective technique of wax removal.
